Before you submit

Job Application Checklist: Resume to Interview Prep

The final few minutes before submitting an application are where easy mistakes happen: the wrong resume version, a broken portfolio link, inconsistent dates, an unfinished required field, or a filename that makes sense only to you. A repeatable checklist catches those details before they become part of the application.

Verify the employer and the posting

Confirm that the company, role, location, and application destination are legitimate and match what you intended to apply for. For unfamiliar employers, verify the role through the company's official website when possible.

Be especially cautious when an unexpected recruiter asks for money, banking information, gift cards, or identity documents before a credible hiring process.

Open the exact resume you plan to upload

Check the headline, summary, dates, contact information, links, and first-page emphasis. Make sure the file reflects this role rather than another application you recently tailored.

Review page breaks and confirm that PDF text is selectable or that the Word layout has not shifted unexpectedly.

Complete the application consistently

Application forms may ask for the same work history already on your resume. Keep titles and dates consistent unless the form requires a different format.

Answer required questions carefully. Do not rush through eligibility, schedule, location, or work-authorization questions simply because they appear near the end.

Save a record of what you submitted

Record the company, role, date, posting link, resume filename, and any contact information in your application tracker.

If the posting disappears later, your saved details will help you prepare for an interview without relying on memory.

Prepare for the next step immediately

After applying, make a few notes about why the role interested you and which parts of your background you emphasized. That takes only a few minutes and gives you a head start if a recruiter calls unexpectedly.

Then return to the search instead of repeatedly refreshing the application portal.
