Job search communication

When and How to Follow Up After Applying

Following up can be useful when you have a real contact and enough time has passed for the employer to review applications. It is not a requirement for every job, and repeated messages rarely improve an application that the employer has already decided not to move forward.

Check the posting and confirmation message first

Some employers say not to contact them, while others provide a recruiter or hiring-manager email. Follow the instructions you were given before using a generic timing rule.

An application confirmation may also include a timeline or portal where status updates appear.

Give the employer time to process applications

If no timeline is provided, waiting roughly a week before a brief follow-up is a reasonable starting point for many ordinary applications. Fast-moving roles may move sooner, while large organizations and public employers can take longer.

If the posting has a closing date, the employer may not begin reviewing until after that date.

Keep the message short and specific

Identify the role, mention when you applied, restate one concise reason for your interest or fit, and ask whether there is any additional information you can provide.

Do not resend your entire cover letter in the email. The follow-up should make the recruiter's job easier, not create another long document to process.

Use a real contact when possible

A recruiter who contacted you, a hiring manager listed on the posting, or a networking contact who invited follow-up is more useful than guessing email addresses across the company.

If no appropriate contact is available, it may be better to let the application stand.

Know when to stop

One thoughtful follow-up is usually enough unless the employer responds or gives you a new timeline. Repeated messages every few days can create pressure without adding useful information.

Keep applying elsewhere while you wait. A follow-up is one part of a search, not a reason to pause the search.

Put this into the builder

Before following up, open the exact resume file you submitted and refresh yourself on the version the employer received. If you tailored the file, your tracker and filename should make that easy to identify.
