How to List Education on a Resume

The education section changes as your career grows. Early on, it may carry important evidence about training, coursework, and projects. Later, it often becomes a compact credential section near the bottom of the resume.

Use the credential and school as the anchor

List the degree, certificate, program, or credential along with the school or training provider. Add the city and state when useful, especially if the institution is not widely known.

If the program is in progress, use an expected completion date rather than making it look finished.

Choose dates that answer the reader's question

For current students, an expected graduation or completion date is usually more useful than a start date. For completed education, the completion year may be enough.

You do not need to include high school once college-level education or substantial professional experience makes it irrelevant, unless the employer specifically asks for it.

Use coursework selectively

Relevant coursework can help when you are early in a career and the classes explain skills not yet demonstrated elsewhere. Choose a few courses that connect to the role rather than pasting the entire transcript.

As work experience grows, coursework usually becomes less important and can be removed.

Add honors, GPA, and activities only when they help

Honors, scholarships, academic leadership, and a strong GPA can be useful for students and recent graduates. They are optional rather than required.

Keep the section focused. A long list of clubs and activities can crowd out stronger evidence unless the activities show leadership or relevant work.

Treat nondegree training honestly

Bootcamps, professional certificates, online programs, and continuing education can belong on a resume when they are relevant. Name the credential accurately and do not present a short course as a degree.

Certifications with expiration dates should be kept current.
